A second-hand Mac Pro may cost as little as a new iMac, with much better expandability and DIY options. A Mini would give you modularity, and you still can put it to good use later when it is no longer your main DAW. The performance difference is remarkable (see tests at and Macworld). On a Mini, I'd make sure to invest in the i7 upgrade. Are you absolutely sure it has to be an iMac? If you have, or can get cheaply, a monitor and keyboard, a current Mac Mini is a perfect and much underrated option. Unfortunately, they are still quite expensive at small capacities, and you'll need external drives for mass storage all the more. Besides RAM and i7 processor, the biggest performance increase would come from replacing the built-in HD with an SSD. The floods in Thailand have wrecked the plants of most major HD producers, and prices are flaring (50-200% increases over the past week). Unfortunately, this is a bad time to buy HD. Better get the lowest capacity built-in HD you can reasonably get by with, and invest in high-quality external drives. You pay premium prices for small capacity built-in increase. A lot cheaper than Apple's RAM upgrade, very high quality.
RAM: Buy the lowest config (4GB AFAIK), get 16 GB from OWC if supported, 8GB otherwise. Otherwise, there's no mileage in the slight difference between the i5 versions. The real performance jump comes with the i7. or could I even get away with 2.5-GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 and 8 GB RAM?Five years ago, either of these configurations would have been sci-fi, and a lot of good music was produced on lesser hardware.
